RawHyde Explores
(Febuary Ride)
Our February event will in the legendary land of Baja. It's a simple word "Baja" but it stirs the imagination and conjures up stories of the fabled Baja 1000, the Tecate Score 250 and the Baja 500. Names like Larry Roesler, Johnny Campbell and Jimmy Lewis are part of any discussion of Baja. If you have never been there let us introduce you to the incredible riding that exists just a few miles south of the Border. Mexico in general does not deserve the reputation that it has garnered from the dingy border towns like Tijuana, Jaurez & Nogales.
Our weekend exploration of Baja will begin with "crossing the border" at Tecate, which is located about 25 miles east of San Diego. Tecate is not the "normal" border town as it is clean and for the most part kind of "sleepy". It has the easiest border crossing in the state, and is actually a darn nice place.
We will all meet at Rancho Santa Veronica, a historic bullfighter training center just east of Tecate. RSV's history is rich with motorcycle lore and it has been the staging area and start point for many Baja motorcycle races. It is a perfect venue to begin a long weekend in Mexico.
The agenda will be to ride the Campaniero trail from Rancho Santa Veronica with an optional route via Laguna Hasen and on to San Felipe. In San Felipe we take a hotel and have dinner in town at the cultural icon known as Rice and Beans. The next day we move on to Mike's Sky ranch. If you have never been to Mike's it is absolutely & positively a must see in Baja. It is the definitive adventure and moto historic place in Baja. We will camp and have dinner RawHyde style at Mike's and back to San Diego the next day.
Mexico is an enigma to many people, it is portrayed by the news media as a dirty and corrupt country, but in our experience it is a wonderful, friendly, and perfect place to go "Adventure riding". We will cross the route of the famed Baja 1000 off road race a couple of times on this ride, and you will have a chance to put your off road riding talents to the test. There are several sections of deep sand, and the road into Mikes Sky Ranch can be a challenge. Especially if there has been rain.
