RawHyde Explores
(January Ride)

Start the year out right with an amazing "exploration" of California's most remote state park. Doesn't that just sound like something adventurous? The Mojave National preserve is unbelievable. It's seldom visited, and it has a lot of things to see and do that are just downright amazing. There is the historic Mojave road, Mitchell Caverns, the Lava tubes, the 2nd longest dirt road in the state, the largest Joshua tree forest in the world… ...and much more.

Here is a little detail about a lot of great rides we can take.

THE MOJAVE ROAD:

THE original road into the state of California. And it's a great road for a "big adventure bike" It has quite a history; dating back to the early days of Western Exploration Those were hostile times with Indian uprisings common place, thus the Mojave road has several Calvary forts and outposts that can be visited today.

THE 2nd LONGEST DIRT ROAD IN THE STATE:

It's called The New York Mountains trail. It is 62 beautiful miles of back country dirt road. The road runs through its "namesake mountains" which will make you feel as if you are in Sedona. Huge red sandstone cliffs, with neat little single tracks running through the rocks. It's a great place to explore.

THE HOLE IN THE WALL:

This is a really fun place. Its history goes back to an old time cowboy shoot out between the good guys and the bad guys. The good guys cornered the bad guys in a narrow canyon. Lots of gunfire followed. The good guys went into the little canyon only to find that the bad guys had escaped somehow. "The Hole in the wall" is a narrow slot at the back of the canyon… I mean real narrow, maybe 3 feet wide, that drops straight down into the next valley through a shear stone cliff. The bad guys had escaped this way… Now you can retrace their footsteps via steel rungs that have been installed for your use to climb down to the canyon below.

THE LAVA TUBES:

The Eastern Mojave has seen a lot of volcanic activity over the millennia, and there is a wonderful phenom enon called a lava tube at the end of a moderately difficult dirt road. Its crazy but out in the middle of the desert is a steel rung ladder that just appears out of the ground, and leads down into a "Lava Tube". Here's how they come about… lava tube is created when a flow of lava cools on top and forms a crust and then the still molten lava below flows on down stream leaving a sort of long cave… known as a lava tube. They are rather rare, but a great example exists here in the Mojave. We will make a little expedition out of finding it… I have heard of the tube but I have never been there… so let's explore together.

THE CIMA DOME & THE JOSHUA TREE FOREST:

The area has a volcanic past, and there are two more unique things to see and explore. The Cima dome is the largest Lava Dome in North America, and on top of it is the world's largest Joshua tree forest. The list goes on and on… So much to see and do…

The weather in January should be great, as we are not too far from the Colorado River where thousands of snowbirds flock each winter. (I guess you can trust the snowbirds to know where it s warm)
